Part 3: Minor Arcana - Swords

Ace of Swords
The birth of an idea and swift action will win the day. Success.

Reversed Meaning
Ease up.
The initiative is being blocked in some way.
If this reading isn't appropriate, the message may be that you are entering murky ethical or moral water. Your sense of right and wrong is being challenged and compromised. It may be time to make some tough decision


Two of Swords
The central meaning of this card is a stalemate. You are caught in a dilemma or involved in a problem but are unable to move forward because of a reluctance to view the situation in its true light.

Reversed Meaning
A compromise has been made, or a decision has been made for you.
Perhaps you have accepted, but are not moving forward with it in a positive direction. You may need to engage more fully in the creative process.



Three of Swords
This is sorrow experienced at the deepest level. Life feels bleak. This card may signal a separation, breakup, probably because you have been betrayed or deceived. Although this is very painful and can make you reproach yourself for having been so trusting, you will eventually be able to move beyond the situation.
Occasionally, this card indicates that a medical procedure, such as an operation or injection, is causing worry.

Reversed Meaning
You're on the mend from a heartbreak. Mitigated or lessened. This isn't the great drama you thought it was going to be.
Another way to interpret it is as an admonishment not to give in to heartache, or let sorrow sway your decisions.


Four of Swords
This is a time to relax and recharge your batteries.
This card advocates rest after a period of hard work and possibly adversity.
It can describe a period of convalescence after an illness.

Reversed Meaning
You're alive again.
This card indicates that something or someone is preventing your much-needed rest. You could be suffering from insomnia or maybe you can never sit still because your mind is always racing. Time makes you even more anxious. There isn't enough of it to indulge all your fantastic ideas.


Five of Swords
This is a difficult card because it describes the need to accept your limitations. You may have to be prepared to walk away from something that has not worked out in the way you wanted.

Reversed Meaning
Back on equal footing.


Six of Swords
Difficult times will soon be over and you will feel you are moving into more peaceful waters. You are still prepared for a struggle, and therefore ready for the worst.
Sometimes indicates a house move in which you will feel more secure or happier.

Reversed Meaning
Stuck. You tried to leave it behind, but something is holding you back.
A wrong turn and a need to backtrack.


Seven of Swords
You have to use tact and intelligence and choose your words carefully. Play your cards close to your chest, perhaps because you do not know who to trust.

Reversed Meaning
An outcast or someone who doesn't fit in.
You have nothing to fear.


Eight of Swords
You feel trapped by difficult circumstances and there is no way out because all options are barred.

Reversed Meaning
New hope to see beyond the fear. There is a way to exit. They may not be as unbreakable as they seem.


Nine of Swords
Worries and fears are hanging over you. These anxieties may be causing sleepless nights and an overpowering feeling of doom and gloom.
They is not real anxiety. Re-examine the thoughts that have led you to this state. You'll probably find they have no basis in reality.

Bringing a new day.


Ten of Swords
What is done is done. An era has ended. The axe has fallen and you are facing the worst. There is an inevitability to this ending, but it also carries a message of hope because it is paving the way for something new to develop in its place. Once you have allowed yourself to grieve for what you have lost, you can begin to look to the future with hope and a sense of renewal.

Dawn of a new day.


Page of Swords
They are sharp and clever.
They may also be manipulative.
Skilful vigilance. Be vigilant, especially in your dealings with other people.

Reversed Meaning
Hyper-vigilance. This card indicates that someone is acting secretly or spying for inappropriate, selfish reasons.
Mental illness.


Knight of Swords
This card represents a situation that starts quickly and ends just as fast. Once it is over you may be left wondering what on earth it was all about, or what you let yourself in for. Alternatively, you may realise that your life has changed because of the snap decisions you made.
When this card indicates a person, they are clever and successful. They are also impatient to make things happen.

Reversed Meaning
The sharp intellect has grown dull or is clouded by greed or some other negative emotion.
You have grown weary of the everlasting fight against evil and are experiencing despair. Try to remember the intellectual reasons for your struggles and efforts.


Queen of Swords
If life has been hard for you recently, this card is telling you to take a stoical attitude and to trust that things will gradually improve. In the meantime, you will learn valuable lessons through adversity.
This is a woman who has lived through them with endurance and fortitude.

Reversed Meaning
A muddled, sometimes narrow-minded.
A lack of grieving. It warns you to watch out for intelligence acting without regard to emotion and the feelings of self and others.


King of Swords
Stern but fair and who is used to making decisions. He has a strong moral code which is reliable but not always comfortable, and a powerful of air of authority.
You should consult an expert for a solution to your current difficulties.

Mental exhaustion.
